RIDER BIOMECHANICS IRELAND
Nicky started riding in England at the age of 6 and quickly became a regular face at the local riding schools at weekends and school holidays, helping out and learning stable management. At the age of 11 she went to work at weekends for a local horse dealer, riding and starting ponies and cobs.
At the age of 12 she moved to Ireland and was finally able to have her own pony. She also started helping local children with their ponies, grooming for local pony shows and starting and riding horses.
At 21 she graduated with first class honours from University of Limerick with a degree in Equine Science (Equitation option), where she studied under the great Michael Herbert FBHS. During her time in college she worked as a riding instructor, as a professional groom and exercise rider at a top eventing yard, at a stud and at a top show jumping yard.
She then joined the Irish Equine Centre in Johnstown, Naas, Co. Kildare as an analyst in the BSE laboratory and now works in the Forensics lab. She began competing with a grade C showjumper over one meter courses. With her own young horses, she then competed at riding club level dressage, showjumping and eventing.
She had started to compete in Eventing Ireland one day events when her horse Honey got injured. During the mare’s recovery, she began a seven year study of Natural Horsemanship through the Parelli program, including attending a four week horsemanship course in Colorado. It was through Parelli that she met Colleen Kelly.
Colleen Kelly’s Rider Biomechanics program is simple and effective with a great regard for the wellbeing of the horse. She has scientifically tested her theories and exercises and has simplified and clarified many complex areas of dressage. Colleen’s background in rehabilitation and biomechanics for athletes, combined with her own experience competing and judging Grand Prix dressage makes her the leading expert in the field.
Nicky completed the International Societies Rider Biomechanics teacher training, receiving the highest practical mark for the course. She is now available for coaching.
She is currently investigating the use of positive reinforcement in horse development and training and has begun training with Horse Sport Ireland to become a registered coach.
