RIDER BIOMECHANICS PROGRAMME

COLLEEN KELLY’S RIDER BIOMECHANICS PROGRAMME

A new look at how the rider influences the horse.

Biomechanics is the mechanics of how the body moves.  Be it human or horse, we all move in a mechanical way that can be tested, trained and improved.

RIDER Biomechanics looks at a rider’s movement, position and, importantly, WHY imbalances occur in the rider. It focuses on how the rider’s position influences the horse, how to stabilise the rider and strengthen his/her position and at higher levels, how to refine the rider’s aids.

Colleen Kelly, world leader in Rider Biomechanics, has undertaken studies into the mechanics and influence of rider position and movement on the horse. She has simplified the concepts and methods to give a style of coaching that is extremely effective while being fun and is based in tested scientific research. Rather than just “look up and get your heels down”, rider biomechanics examines WHY the rider’s heels come up in the first place, how it affects the rider’s balance and how it affects the horse.

Colleen has taken some of the world’s best balance exercises from her background in exercise physiology and working in rehab gyms, (and sadly her own personal experience learning to walk again), and now uses those same principals and exercises to improve the rider. Combined with accelerated learning techniques, no matter what the level of rider, or the horse sport, every rider can improve their balance and co-ordination, thereby improving confidence and stability, refining aids and developing greater harmony with the horse.

Her list of credentials is far too long to give her complete résumé here.

An EFA – NJAS Official Judge (Retired), Colleen also received an unheard of 100% in the Official Judge’s Dressage Examination Colleen started to become officially recognized for her unique and original work by being asked by Official Federations around the world to speak on the elite lecture circuit at world-class conferences such as the Equine Affaire, in Massachusetts, Ohio and California, Equine Extravaganza  and EquineXpo in Australia, Equicon, the National Horse Festival and repeatedly presenting both biomechanics and vaulting at Equitana. Colleen has also given lectures and presentations at the world’s largest University Programs including:

►    University of Kentucky►    Averett University►    University of Queensland►    Queensland Horse Council

Colleen spent 8 years in the research department with the University of NSW at the CCLRU, which developed her great interest in scientific research.

Colleen was also honoured to be accepted to ride with Mary Wanless, famous author of “Ride with Your Mind” at the magnificent “West Wilts” facility at Holt near Bath, England, and to this day Colleen credits a lot of her best work to this amazing lady. She also trained with the Head Rider from the Royal School in Spain: Manolo Mendez and has had many pupils on State and National Dressage Squads.

Colleen not only gave 15 presentations at the World Equestrian Games (Kentucky 2010), but had 5 pupils competing as well. Colleen has trained Olympic and Paralympic athletes and World Champions. The world’s highest level riders work on their seat, balance & position all the time.

Colleen is the President of Rider Biomechanics.
